EP 10: Massive Internet Outage. Attack On The Internet of Things (IoT)

On October 23rd, 2016 "Half the Internet" went offline.

The Cause?

- Insecure Internet-connected devices designed to make your life more connected and convenient. This connected mesh of little miscellaneous devices is also known as the "Internet of Things" or (IoT) for short.

How?

- Malware that searches the internet for these devices was configured to send endless traffic to DNS Service Provider Dyn. The traffic disrupted the lookup information for many popular website on the web.

This week's episode breaks down how, why, and what we can do (if anything) to prevent this from happening again in the future.

SPOILER ALERT!

- NOT A DAMN THING CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT THE FROM HAPPENING.

These attacks are only going to get worse, more frequent, and completely disrupt our critical infrastructure in the near future.
